One Step Backward for Every Two Steps Forward

I remember the day clearly, a crisp autumn morning in Atlanta. The leaves were just starting to turn, and the air was cool as I walked down my old neighborhood’s sidewalk. It wasn’t any walk; each step backward felt like a reminder of where I had come from and how far I had fallen.

The Neighborhood

The houses on either side were small, with peeling paint and overgrown yards. Each held memories, good ones and bad. But today, the good ones faded as I passed by them. All I could think about was the last time I’d been here.

It wasn’t long ago, just a few months back. I was in this same spot, arguing with my ex-girlfriend, Sarah. It started when she said something that cut deep. We were standing right there on the sidewalk; she stood firm while I felt like walking on eggshells.
