A Bite of Night
I remember the night like it was yesterday, 12:30 AM on New Year’s Eve, and my stomach was growling like a wolf in the woods. The party had been going strong for hours, but when the DJ paused to let everyone catch their breath, Kofi suggested we head out for some late-night munchies.
We stepped into this tiny, dimly lit snack shop on Decatur Street. It was one of those places where you’d think it was closed, but they were just in the process of opening up. The smell hit me first, a mix of fresh fries and melted cheese that sent my saliva glands into overdrive.
The Fries
Kofi grabbed us two large bowls of shoestring fries. As we sat down at a tiny table in the corner, I couldn’t help but notice the graffiti on the walls, gritty words and sketches from people who had been here late into the night. I reached for my fries, picked one up, and bit down.

The first bite was like nothing I’d ever tasted before. It was perfect, crispy outside, fluffy inside, and smothered in melted cheese that oozed down onto my shirt. The sauce was tangy, just enough to make me want more. Each fry was a memory of that night, from the music playing softly in the background to Kofi’s laugh at something absurd we’d just said.
A Shared Moment
As I slurped up the last bit of cheese with the tip of my finger, Kofi leaned over and whispered, “You know what they say about midnight snacks.” I shook my head, curious. He continued, “They define your year.”
I didn’t get it then, but those words stuck with me long after we left that shop.

The Track
Now, listen to “After Hours: Nothing to Impress” and let the track take you back to a night like this one. The song is raw, just like that memory. It’s about finding solace in simple moments and not taking them for granted.
