The Cost of Memory
Every corner has its story, every melody its price. The cost of not knowing, the cost of silence, the cost of regret. This is my story, “Clarinet & Codeine,” a song that marks one of the most painful memories of my life.
The Clarinet
Walking down the dimly lit street, the air thick with the scent of late-night jazz and cheap liquor. I was just a kid, a kid with a dream and a lot of time to waste. I had just picked up a cheap clarinet, a relic from a bygone era, and was trying to find my place in the world. It was in this moment, with this clarinet in hand, that I first heard “Clarinet & Codeine.” The song was a haunting blend of melancholy and hope, a perfect score for a young, lost soul.

The Codeine
It was a night of mistakes and bad decisions. I was trying to escape the harsh reality of my life, the same reality that my father had tried to escape with the same drug, codeine. I found a bottle in an alley, a bottle that promised to numb the pain. I took a hit, and as the codeine took effect, the clarinet’s melody transformed from a distant dream into a haunting reality.
The sound of the clarinet was now a constant in my life, a constant reminder of the choices I had made. It was a song that I played over and over, a song that I listened to in the moments of deepest regret. It was a song that I would later come to understand was a warning, a warning that I had ignored.
The Cost
The cost of that moment was high. I lost my clarity, my purpose, and most importantly, myself. I became a shell of the person I once was, a shell that played the clarinet but could no longer hear the music. The codeine became my constant companion, a constant reminder of the moment that changed everything.

But today, I can see the cost of not knowing, the cost of silence, the cost of regret. I can see that every stream of codeine bought back a piece of what it cost. I can see that I was the same person, with the same income, but with a different knowledge. A knowledge that comes from facing the music, from facing the cost of my choices.
