Lilly Singh Movie ‘Doin’ It’ Sets Release Date With Aura Ent…

EXCLUSIVE: Recently launched U.S. distributor Aura Entertainment has acquired Doin’ It, a sex education comedy produced, co-written by and starring Lilly Singh (The Muppets Mayhem), in her first leading feature film role. The film, which premiered at last year’s SXSW Film Festival, will open in theaters across the country on September 19.

Directed by Sara Zandieh (A Simple Wedding) from her script written with Singh and Neel Patel, Doin’ It follows Maya (Singh), a 30-year-old software engineer from a conservative Indian family who moonlights as a high school substitute teacher while working on a teen-focused app. When she’s unexpectedly assigned to teach sex education — despite never having had sex herself — chaos and comedy ensue.

In a statement to Deadline on the acquisition, Singh said, “I’ve always wanted to tell stories that break boundaries and bring joy. Doin’ It does both. We laughed our asses off making it, and I can’t wait for audiences to see a comedy that puts brown girls, awkward moments, and cultural taboos front and center.”

Singh’s Unicorn Island Productions developed the project with Likely Story, also bringing in Camelback Productions, which financed and co-produced. Producers included Anthony Bregman (In the Heights), Erica Matlin (The Half of It), Singh, Polly Auritt (The Kingdom), and Anita Verma-Lallian, under Likely Story, Unicorn Island Productions, and Camelback Productions. The cast also includes Sonia Dhillon-Tully, Sabrina Jalees, Ana Gasteyer, Stephanie Beatriz, Mary Holland, Utkarsh Ambudkar, and Trevor Salter.

Doin’ It is exactly the kind of fresh, authentic comedy that defines our slate,” said Aura CEO Marc Goldberg. “It’s wildly funny, sex-positive, and refreshingly honest. Lilly Singh shines as both filmmaker and performer, cementing herself as one of the most exciting voices in film comedy today.”

We were first to report on the May launch of Aura Entertainment, a distributor focused on commercially-oriented features for theatrical and digital, which is backed by Capstone Studios, Signature Entertainment, and Ascending Media Group. Set to release 10-15 films annually, the company has already acquired 14 for its 2025-2026 slate. Soon, they’ll also release paramedic buddy comedy Code 3 starring Rainn Wilson, Lil Rel Howery, and Aimee Carrero (September 12), the Dave Bautista actioner Trap House (November 14), and the family film K-Pops! from Anderson .Paak (January 2026).
