‘The Parent Trap’ Parody Play ‘Ginger Twinsies’ Sets Off-Bro…

Here’s the 411, sis. The Parent Trap is getting a major makeover!

More than 25 years after Lindsay Lohan’s Hallie and Annie first shook hands at summer camp and swapped lives, the beloved 1998 Nancy Meyers film will be reimagined as a new stage play, PEOPLE can exclusively reveal.

Titled Ginger Twinsies, the production is not an official adaptation, but instead a parody play (“legally speaking,” the show jokes in its marketing). Written and directed by comedian and Lucille Lortel-nominated actor Kevin Zak, the show will have its world premiere Off-Broadway this summer at the Orpheum Theatre.

Previews begin on July 10, ahead of an opening night on July 24. The comedy is currently scheduled for a 16-week strictly limited engagement, through Oct. 26.

Preston Whiteway (O’Neill Theater Center), Tony Award winner Jenny Steingart (Ars Nova co-founder, Freestyle Love Supreme, All In) and Mandy Hackett (Public Theater, All In, Hell’s Kitchen) will produce the play. It’s described as “a loving, outlandish, and wildly inappropriate send up of the Lindsay Lohan/Nancy Meyers classic that made us all believe that Oreos go great with peanut butter, wedding gowns deserve top hats, and being young and beautiful is not a crime.”

“So, pack your bags!” a release shared with PEOPLE reads. “Kevin Zak (no credits) invites you to enjoy this 80-minute Parent Trap parody stacked with nostalgia, camp (literally, they go camping), and some unexpected twists.”

The Parent Trap hit theaters in July 1998. As fans surely know, the movie (a remake of a 1961 Disney classic) follows identical twins Hallie and Annie who were separated at birth, reunite by accident at a summer camp and decide to switch places to get their unsuspecting parents back together.

Lohan was just 12 when she starred in The Parent Trap as both Hallie and Annie. She earned rave reviews for her ability to convincingly play both characters, with the film’s success propelling her into the spotlight and earning her parts in movies like Freaky Friday, Mean Girls and Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen.

Joining Lohan in the film’s cast were Dennis Quaid — as the girls’ father, Nick Parker — and the late Natasha Richardson, as their elegant British mother, Elizabeth James. The movie also featured  Lisa Ann Walter and Simon Kunz in beloved supporting roles as Chessy and Martin, the family’s quirky housekeepers-turned-matchmakers, as well as Elaine Hendrix as the scheming Meredith Blake, Nick’s girlfriend who was just after his fortune.

The movie opened to warm reviews and was a box office hit, earning over $92 million worldwide. Over the years, it’s become a nostalgic staple for millennial audiences and frequently ranks among Disney’s best live-action remakes.

While there’s never been an official sequel, Meyers and the cast have often expressed affection for the film in interviews. In 2020, the cast reunited for a virtual table read and discussion, where they reminisced about filming and praised Lohan’s incredible debut. Meyers has also hinted that she’d be open to revisiting the story in some way, though no plans have been confirmed.

The original Parent Trap released in 1961 and starring Hayley Mills in the dual role of Susan and Sharon. That version, directed by David Swift, was based on the German novel Lottie and Lisa by Erich Kästner and became an instant hit for Disney, spawning three made-for-TV sequels in the ’80s. It even earned two 1962 Oscar nominations, for Best Sound (Robert O. Cook) and Best Film Editing (Philip W. Anderson).

Tickets for Ginger Twinsies go on sale on Monday, May 5 at 10 a.m. ET. Casting will be announced at a future date.
