Thirty Feet of Trouble – Police + Ensemble

A raw tale of tension and survival on the streets of Atlanta.

The night began like any other, but I knew better. The air was thick with the scent of trouble, and my gut told me to keep low.

A Routine Checkpoint

I pulled over at Thirty Feet from Northside, a familiar stretch where street life and law enforcement intersected. As soon as I rolled down my window, a police cruiser parked directly behind me. The officer’s eyes scanned me up and down like they were trying to see through me.

“License and registration,” he commanded, his tone not quite aggressive but definitely not friendly.

I handed over the documents without hesitation, knowing better than to cause any trouble. But as I sat there, the car doors slammed shut, and a backup unit rolled in. It felt like the weight of the world was pressing down on me.

The Tension Rises

The officer’s partner came up, and his demeanor changed. The room grew smaller, tighter with every second. They began to ask questions, their eyes never leaving mine. I tried to answer calmly but my voice trembled slightly.

“Did you see anyone suspicious around here last night?” the backup officer asked, his words cutting through the silence like a knife.

I shook my head and shifted in my seat. The tension was palpable; every second felt like an eternity. I knew what could happen next if they decided to make it a bigger deal.

The Flash of Light

Suddenly, the light from their flashlights darted around me, searching for something, anything, that might give them reason to detain me further. My heart raced as I tried to keep calm but my hands were clammy, betraying me with every touch on the steering wheel.

“Let’s see your phone,” one of them demanded, his finger pointing toward my dashboard.

I reached slowly, trying not to make a move that might be perceived as threatening. Once I handed it over, they scrolled through my contacts and messages, their faces unreadable. The silence was deafening.

A Narrow Escape

After what felt like an eternity but was probably just minutes, the backup officer spoke again. “You’re free to go,” he said, almost as if he were reciting a script.

I nodded, relief washing over me but replaced quickly by a sense of lingering dread. I stepped out of the car, my legs shaky from the adrenaline. As I walked away, I heard them laughing quietly amongst themselves, their conversation not lost on me.

The Aftermath

That night marked a turning point for me. It wasn’t just the close brush with detainment; it was the stark reminder that every moment is a potential threat. Each street, each person, could be an unpredictable danger.

The song “Thirty Feet of Trouble – Police + Ensemble” captures that feeling, of walking through the gauntlet knowing that any given moment could turn into something much worse. It’s not just about avoiding trouble; it’s about surviving and thriving in spite of it.
