A Family Legacy of Resilience and Triumph
My memoir isn’t just about Diddy’s random act of violence-him attacking me and the 2 who were with me. The deeper story is that every journey has a foundation, a starting point shaped by the people and stories that came before. For me, that foundation is my father, Mr. DeWitt Gilmore Sr., whose incredible life story serves as a testament to resilience, determination, and success. His influence is woven throughout my own journey and prominently featured in my memoir, The Night Puff Tried To Kill Me.
This isnโt just my storyโitโs a family legacy of overcoming obstacles, building businesses, and leaving a mark that inspires others to rise above their challenges.

The Unstoppable Mr. DeWitt Gilmore Sr.
At just 17 years old, my father faced an unimaginable challenge: the loss of his leg. For many, such an event would have been devastating, a reason to pause or give up on certain dreams. But not for Mr. Gilmore. Within three years of that life-altering moment, he was back on the pitching mound for his high school baseball team, defying expectations and proving that determination knows no bounds.
That same spirit propelled him to an extraordinary entrepreneurial career. In Mount Vernon, New York, my father didnโt just surviveโhe thrived. Over the years, he built an impressive portfolio of businesses:
- Five Delicatessens: Cornerstones of the community, serving quality food and fostering connections.
- A Liquor Store and Laundromat: Essential services that provided jobs and convenience to local residents.
- Numerous Rental Properties: Investments that reflected his business acumen and provided stability for others.
- A Successful Nightclubโ”Gilmoreโs“: A hotspot that became legendary in its own right, blending entertainment and community in a way only my father could.
And if that wasnโt enough, he achieved all this while raising six childrenโa family legacy that continues to grow and thrive.
Why This Matters in The Night Puff Tried To Kill Me
My memoir, The Night Puff Tried To Kill Me, isnโt just about my experiences; itโs about the larger narrative of resilience and ambition that my father exemplified. His story shows that success isnโt about avoiding adversity but about meeting it head-on and forging ahead with purpose.
By including his journey in the memoir, I wanted to honor the values he instilled in meโpersistence, hard work, and a belief that anything is possible with the right mindset. His life serves as both inspiration and proof that our challenges donโt define us; our response to them does.
