“Boy Friend” by Photographer Kenny Wu

A visual meditation on contemporary masculinity by New York-based photographer and filmmaker Kenny Wu. A cinematographer by trade, Wu’s work is grounded in self-discovery as his captured observations of his surroundings often reveals parts of his own identity.

“Whether it’s an exploration of straight male intimacy, or a two-month sabbatical in Taiwan, I’m constantly learning parts of myself through observing what I am drawn to document through photography. Traveling is my favored mode of disconnecting from the daily grind of life, and allows me to look at life through a fresh perspective as an observant outsider…. Whether internationally or domestically, being in a foreign environment inspires me to see beyond habituation, creating awareness, and presence necessary for capturing the small moments that make up our daily lives.”

His personal photo project, “Boy Friend,” is a visual exploration of male intimacy and belonging. While straight men are often encouraged to internalize their emotions and prioritize their masculinity over softness, Wu creates a space where his subjects could freely explore the intimacy and camaraderie of male friendship. The images consider the question of what it looks like when men are allowed to explore their softer sides without judgement or preconceived notions of what masculinity looks like.

Kenny Wu participated in our 2025 Booooooom Art & Photo Book Award and made our shortlist. Click here to check out all of our current and upcoming open calls!
