Netflix is set to reboot the beloved 2004 film 13 Going on 30, a charming romantic comedy about a teenage girl who wakes up one day to discover she has aged 17 years overnight. The original film stars Jennifer Garner, Christa B. Allen, Judy Greer, Andy Serkis, and others. According to Deadline, the upcoming reboot will feature Logan Lerman from The Perks of Being a Wallflower and Emily Bader from People We Meet on Vacation in leading roles. Garner, who starred in the original, will serve as an executive producer for the new version, with Brett Haley directing the project. Haley previously directed People We Meet on Vacation, which was released on Netflix earlier this year.
“13 Going on 30 is one of those rare, perfect films,” Haley shared in a statement. “It’s funny, emotional, deeply human, and features unforgettable performances from Jennifer Garner, Mark Ruffalo, and Judy Greer. I’ve been a longtime fan, so I feel a tremendous sense of responsibility stepping into this reimagining. Jennifer Garner’s involvement as an executive producer, especially given her integral role in the original, is incredibly meaningful. I’m also thrilled to reunite with Emily Bader after People We Meet on Vacation. She and Logan Lerman make a magical pairing. I feel very fortunate to be entrusted with something that means so much to so many people.”
The screenplay for the reboot is written by Hannah Marks, with revisions by Flora Greeson. Production is led by Joe Roth and Jeff Kirschenbaum, alongside executive producers Donna Roth, Susan Arnold, Scott Hemming, Alyssa Altman, and Hannah Marks.
The original film tells the story of Jenna (Christa B. Allen), a girl fed up with the social pressures of junior high who fantasizes about being a confident, well-adjusted adult. Her wish unexpectedly comes true when she wakes up as a 30-year-old woman (Jennifer Garner), only to realize that adulthood comes with its own set of challenges and surprises.
As of now, a release date for the 13 Going on 30 reboot has not been announced. The 2004 film remains available for streaming on Kanopy and Hoopla.
