Predictable versus unpredictable outcomes:

When I think about the concept of predictable outcomes, I’m struck by the life of my father. Here was a man who, despite what God had taken away, managed to achieve an extraordinary level of productivity and resourcefulness. With one leg, he still reached 90% effectiveness, outperforming what 99% of men could accomplish with all their limbs and faculties intact. His life was a testament to relentless determination, resilience, and an unyielding work ethic.

Would you give up if you had the same cards my father was dealt? That’s the question that gnawed at me today. If you know what the outcome could be, are you ready to put in the effort necessary to achieve it? This isn’t just a reflection on my father’s life; it’s a challenge to all of us.

Predictable Outcomes Are Rooted in Consistency

Predictable outcomes arise from intentional action, consistency, and unwavering commitment. They are not confined to one area of life but extend to relationships, careers, finances, and personal growth. If we approach these areas with discipline and purpose, we can create the outcomes we desire. The principles I share in my new book, A Year With Purpose, revolve around harnessing this predictability to achieve lasting fulfillment and success.

In Relationships

Consider the difference between a casual, inconsistent approach to dating and a committed, intentional one. If you meet someone, take her on a date, and then reach out sporadically with no genuine effort to make her life easier or show appreciation, the outcome is unpredictable. She won’t see you as someone worth investing her time or trust in.

But if you show consistency — thoughtful gestures, time investment, and acts of service like filling her car with gas or offering support when she needs it — you create a predictable foundation for a strong relationship. Predictable outcomes in relationships arise from reliability, consistency, and demonstrating value.

In Business and Career

In business, predictable outcomes stem from professionalism and follow-through. Whether you’re a freelancer, a vendor, or an employee, your ability to meet deadlines, communicate transparently, and exceed expectations determines your success. If you pay your bills on time, refer clients, and show that you are dependable, opportunities will grow. Predictable outcomes come to those who demonstrate their value repeatedly and consistently.

In Finances

Financial stability is another realm where predictability reigns supreme. Consistently depositing money into a bank account, avoiding overdrafts, and honoring financial commitments signal to institutions that you are reliable. These behaviors lead to better credit, higher financial trust, and more opportunities for growth. On the other hand, unpredictable behavior — late payments, overspending, or neglecting your finances — breeds instability.

In Insurance and Risk Management

Even insurance companies rely on predictability. Your past behavior determines your risk profile. If you have a history of accidents or missed payments, you are seen as a liability. Insurance is designed for “just in case” scenarios, not as a safety net for recklessness. Consistency in responsible driving, timely payments, and careful planning results in lower premiums and greater financial security.

The Broader Impact: Family and Community

Dr. George Fraser recently pointed out how our GDP as a community is the lowest due to a lack of unity, consistency, and solidarity. While other groups — White, Latino, Asian, and East Indian — demonstrate cohesion, we often fall short. Predictable outcomes in family and community life depend on building a foundation of trust, support, and mutual commitment. Healing begins here, with consistent actions that strengthen relationships and lift each other up.

My Father’s Legacy of Audacity

Returning to my father, his story is one of defiant persistence. At 17, he lost his leg. He could have given up, but he didn’t. Instead, he poured his raw energy, steel will, and audacity into building multiple businesses, raising a family, and creating a legacy of possibility. His life was not perfect, but it was a beacon of progress and resilience.

This raw energy and audacity are in all of us. My book, A Year With Purpose, is a guide to channeling that energy into predictable outcomes — outcomes that you know you can achieve through consistency, dedication, and a relentless mindset. Whether it’s in your relationships, career, finances, or personal development, predictable success is within reach.
