Vegan Gluten-Free Morning Glory Muffins

0

[ad_1]

Say hello to morning glory muffins, made vegan + gluten-free! A classic treat originally created by Pam McKinstry in 1978 at her Nantucket restaurant, Morning Glory Cafe, these muffins are lightly sweet, subtly spiced, and packed with fruits, veggies, AND nuts. OH yeah!

Our gluten-free twist uses oat flour and potato starch (no almond flour!) to create a tender muffin that’s wholesome and satisfying. Brew your favorite coffee or tea and let’s make muffins!

Carrots, apples, coconut sugar, almond milk, orange juice, walnuts, raisins, spices, flours, flaxseed meal, coconut, and avocado oil

What is in Morning Glory Muffins?

The original morning glory muffins by Chef Pan McKinstry are filled with wholesome goodies that make them stand out from other muffins: shredded coconut, raisins, grated apple and carrots, pineapple chunks, pecans or walnuts, and cinnamon. For the classic muffin ingredients, she includes flour, sugar, baking soda, salt, eggs, vegetable oil, and vanilla extract.

Our modern twist keeps the majority of the wholesome goodies, but swaps some of the more classic ingredients to make them vegan, gluten-free, naturally sweetened, and even more wholesome. Sound like your jam? Let us show you how it’s done!

How to Make Vegan Gluten-Free Morning Glory Muffins

Our version of these 1-bowl, fruit- & veggie-filled muffins is made with the following ingredients:

  • Flaxseed meal + orange juice – this combination creates the “flax egg” that keeps these vegan/egg-free and adds natural sweetness and a subtle orange flavor!
  • Coconut sugar – a lower glycemic sweetener with a slight caramelized flavor. Brown sugar or cane sugar would also likely work!
  • Avocado oil + dairy-free milk – our version is lower in oil than the classic, which is where dairy-free milk comes in to thin out the batter. Avocado oil is our preferred neutral oil, but you can use another oil, or even melted vegan butter.
  • Oat flour + potato starch – this gluten-free combination provides the perfect balance of being wholesome while adding lightness to prevent the muffins from becoming too dense and moist.
  • Morning glory classics – grated apple and carrot, shredded coconut, raisins, walnuts, cinnamon, vanilla extract, salt, and baking soda.
  • Baking powder – gluten-free baked goods are more prone to being dense and gummy than those made with all-purpose flour, so we include baking powder to provide a little extra lift!

To make your muffins, combine the orange juice and flaxseed meal and let the mixture rest for a few minutes to thicken.

Pouring orange juice into a bowl of flaxseed meal

While that’s thickening, you can grate the carrot and apple using the large side of a box grater (see below).

Grating carrot on a box grater into a bowl of grated carrot and apple

Then you’ll add the remaining ingredients, starting with the wet, then the dry, and finally alllllll those goodies!

Bowl of muffin batter topped with walnuts, coconut, and raisins

Divide the batter between your muffin cups, and let’s bake!

Let cool for a bit, then those beauties are ready for you!

We think you’ll LOVE these muffins! They’re:

Wholesome
Satisfying
Moist
Tender
Naturally sweet
Subtly spiced
Packed with fruits, nuts & veggies
& SO delicious!

These muffins are perfect for on-the-go snacking or a sweet breakfast treat! They pair especially well with a glass of dairy-free milk or a warm cup of coffee or tea.

Does it keep? 2-3 Days

  • 1 ½ Tbsp flaxseed meal*
  • 1/2 cup fresh squeezed orange juice, with pulp (2 oranges yield ~1/2 cup or 120 ml juice)
  • 2/3 cup coconut sugar
  • 1/3 cup dairy-free milk (plain, unsweetened // we used almond)
  • 1/4 cup avocado oil (or another neutral oil or melted vegan butter or coconut oil)
  • 1 ½ tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 cup oat flour* (certified gluten-free as needed)
  • 1 cup potato starch* (NOT potato flour)
  • 1 ½ tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp ground ginger
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp sea salt
  • 1 cup (packed) grated apple (1 large or 2 small apples yield ~1 cup packed or 170 g)
  • 2/3 cup (packed) grated carrot (1 medium or 2 small carrots yield ~2/3 cup or 90 g)
  • 1/3 cup raisins (or other dried fruit of choice, like cranberries or currants, chopped if large)
  • 1/2 cup desiccated coconut (or sub more walnuts)
  • 2/3 cup chopped walnuts (omit if nut-free // or sub more coconut)
  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (176 C) and grease a standard-size muffin pan or line with paper liners.

  • In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flaxseed meal and orange juice. Let rest for a few minutes to gel/thicken. If you haven’t already shredded your carrots and apples, you can do so now (we used the large/coarse side of this box grater). There’s no need to squeeze out liquid from the shredded apple or carrot. Set them aside until ready to add.
  • Once the flaxseed has thickened, add the coconut sugar, dairy-free milk, avocado oil (or melted butter), and vanilla. Whisk until well combined.

  • Add the oat flour, potato starch, cinnamon, ginger, baking soda, baking powder, and salt. Mix until smooth with no lumps remaining. Then add the shredded carrots and apples and mix until well combined.

  • Add the raisins, desiccated coconut, and chopped walnuts and mix once more. Let the batter rest for ~5 minutes to thicken slightly.

  • Divide the batter evenly between 12 muffin cups (amount as recipe is written // adjust if altering the default number of servings). They will be full! Bake for 20-24 minutes or until the muffins have risen, are dry to the touch, and a toothpick inserted in the center comes out mostly clean.

  • These muffins can be enjoyed warm, but they will be very moist. We like to let them cool for at least 20 minutes before enjoying them with a glass of dairy-free milk or a warm cup of coffee or tea.
  • Best when fresh. Leftover muffins keep covered at room temperature for 2-3 days, in the refrigerator for 4-5 days, or in the freezer for 1 month (or longer).

*If you want to use an egg instead of flaxseed meal, we suggest 1 large egg (or 2 small eggs) and slightly less dairy-free milk. We haven’t tested it this way, though! Let us know in the comments if you try it.
*We tested replacing the oat flour and potato starch with 2 cups of our Best 1:1 GF Flour Blend. The batter was thicker and the muffins were a little gummy and didn’t taste as wholesome, but they were still delicious.
*If oat-free, you could try buckwheat flour instead of oat flour. We haven’t tested this modification, though. Let us know in the comments if you try it!

Slow Cooker Boston Butt Recipe (Instant Pot Option)

[ad_1]

Growing up and living in the south, I’m pretty familiar with pork barbecue. I’m also familiar with the fact that most barbecue places rely on high fructose corn syrup and other non-foods in their sauce. This Boston butt pork roast recipe avoids all that and simply uses delicious, whole food ingredients for the best taste.

Boston butt is one of the easiest cuts of pork to cut and it’s also one of the most affordable. I’ve been able to find Boston butt from pastured pork at great prices, and slow cooking this recipe makes it incredibly tender. Boston butt roast in the Crockpot is also an easy recipe on days when you’re out of the house all day and need dinner to be ready when you get home. With a houseful of kids and teens in sports that happens a lot around here!

How to Serve Boston Butt Roast

For our family, one Boston butt roast lasts for about 3 meals with all of the leftovers. It’s a tasty source of protein and tastes good on its own, or repurposed into other dishes. We’ve done barbecue omelets with the leftovers. It also tastes great in tacos or for a protein-rich salad.

I like the roast alongside almost any kind of potato or vegetable dish. It’s also great with some sourdough bread, rice, or salad. Try it with some sweet potato fries, savory stuffed sweet potatoes, or roasted Brussel sprouts. Here’s a tip: batch cook some roasted whole sweet potatoes to pull out of the fridge for a fast meal. Throw some Boston butt roast BBQ on top and you’ve got an easy meal!

Use leftovers for tacos, nachos, baked potatoes, lettuce wraps, or breakfast hash.

Tips For the Best Boston Butt Roast Recipe

Store any leftovers in the remaining juices for the best flavor and tenderness. If you ever need to freeze it, freeze it with the liquid too. This protects the texture when it thaws.

If there’s too much liquid for you after cooking, then there’s an easy fix. Simmer for 10–20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until it reduces and looks glossy and slightly thick. It should coat a spoon, not run like broth.

This recipe is great for meal prepping. Use leftovers for tacos, nachos, baked potatoes, lettuce wraps, or even breakfast hash.

Slow Cooker Boston Butt Recipe

An easy slow cooker Boston Butt with flavorful spices, fruity pineapple, and smoky barbecue.

  • Thinly slice the onions and place them in the bottom of a 6-quart or larger slow cooker.

  • Rinse the Boston butt and place it on top of the onions.

  • Sprinkle with spices.

  • Pour the whole can of pineapple over it. If using fresh pineapple, peel, core, and thin chop the pineapple and place over pork.

  • Add the apple cider vinegar.

  • Put the lid on the slow cooker and cook on low for 10-12 hours or until fork tender. Don’t open until at least 8 hours and then check for tenderness.

  • ?After cooking, shred the pork.

  • Spoon out ½ -1 cup cooking liquid and simmer with the BBQ sauce for 5–10 minutes. Pour the liquid back into the pork and stir to coat.

Instant Pot Boston Butt Recipe

The recipe above is for slow cooker Boston butt, but you can easily modify it for the Instant Pot.

Instant Pot Instructions

  1. Turn the Instant Pot to Sauté. Add a small splash of oil and cook the sliced onions for 3–4 minutes until softened. Press Cancel.
  2. Place the Boston butt roast on top of the onions. Sprinkle evenly with all the spices.
  3. Pour the crushed (or fresh chopped) pineapple and apple cider vinegar over the pork. Add ½ cup of water or broth to help the Instant Pot come to pressure.
  4. Secure the lid and set the valve to Sealing. Cook on High Pressure for 75 minutes. Let the pressure release naturally for 20–30 minutes, then release any remaining pressure.
  5. Remove the pork and shred with two forks.
  6. Turn the Instant Pot back to Sauté and simmer the cooking liquid for 10–15 minutes until slightly thickened.
  7. Stir in the barbecue sauce and simmer for 2–3 minutes.
  8. Return the shredded pork to the pot, toss to coat, and serve.

HONG KONG AIRPORT to TSIM SHA TSUI by Bus & by Train (Airpor…

[ad_1]

How do you get from Hong Kong Airport to Tsim Sha Tsui by bus, by MTR, and by Airport Express train? In this article, we’ll show you all your possible options!

TPTKLOOK5
BlogDisclaimer

Tsim Sha Tsui, often abbreviated as TST, is one of the most popular areas to stay in Hong Kong, especially among budget travelers; thanks to its endless options of small but relatively affordable hotels and inns. It’s also very, very accessible.

If you look at the map of Hong Kong, you’ll find Nathan Road cutting across the district and serving as its main artery. It is punctuated with several bus stops and MTR stations. In fact, a big section of this thoroughfare runs parallel to the MTR Tsuen Wan Line. This is especially useful for tourists because most of Hong Kong’s key attractions are accessible from this train line.

Tsim Sha Tsui MapTsim Sha Tsui Map

Tsim Sha Tsui has another popular side: the area surrounding Chatham Road South, which is also lined with several lodging, dining, and shopping establishments.

So, how do you get to Tsim Sha Tsui from the airport? You have two main options: by bus and by train.

WHAT’S COVERED IN THIS GUIDE?

AIRPORT TO TSIM SHA TSUI BY BUS

The bus is the cheapest, easiest, and most convenient way to reach Tsim Sha Tsui from the airport. You can take either:

  • Bus A21 – Regular Bus
    Operating hours: 05:30 AM – 12:00 AM
    Fare: HK$ 34.60
  • Bus N21 – Late Night Bus
    Operating hours: 12:20 AM – 04:40 AM
    Fare: HK$ 23.80

Both bus routes offer a direct way to Tsim Sha Tsui, without a need for switching or transferring to another vehicle, at least if your hotel is located near Nathan Road or Chatham Road South.

Here’s how to travel to Tsim Sha Tsui by bus:

1. Get an Octopus Card.

Consider getting an Octopus Card, which can make your journey much easier and cheaper. An Octopus card is a pre-paid reloadable card that you can use for MTR and bus rides and even purchases at select stores. It will allow you to skip buying tickets each time you’re taking the MTR or scramble for coins when taking the bus. All you need to do is tap the card above the reader and you’re through.

The fare is also cheaper when you use an Octopus Card than when paying at the station. And if you’re taking public transportation multiple times, these discounts rack up and you’ll end up saving a lot!

You can get an Octopus Card from Klook. It costs HKD 97 (PHP 739, USD 12.44), but it already comes with HK$ 50 load that you can use right away. You can pick it up at the airport’s Arrival Hall.

BUY AN OCTOPUS CARD HERE!

You can also book a Data SIM online and pick it up at the airport. A data SIM will make navigating much easier so you’re sure you’re getting off at the right stop.

RESERVE A DATA SIM CARD HERE!

2. Find the A21 or N21 Bus Stop.

At the airport’s Arrival Hall, after claiming your luggage at the carousel and picking up your Octopus Card and SIM card at the right counter, head to your right or follow the signs to the Bus Terminus, which is right in front of the airport building. It’s located outside, and it looks like this.

Now, check the signs and look for the A21 or N21 bus stop. There’s usually a queue because it’s a very popular area. Wait for the A21 bus.

Hong Kong Airport A21 BusHong Kong Airport A21 Bus
Hong Kong Airport A21 Bus

Airport buses are double-deckers. They also display the route or bus number in front, so make sure you’re boarding the right bus.

3. Pay as you board.

When it’s time to board, prepare your Octopus Card and tap it or hover it above the card reader, installed just by the entrance door of the bus.

If you decide to not get an Octopus card, you can pay by cash but make sure you have the exact amount because they don’t give change.

The fare is HK$ 34.60 for the A21 bus or HK$ 23.80 for the N21 bus.

Upon boarding, you’ll immediately see this baggage section where you could leave your suitcase. There’s also a few seats here, but if none is available, just climb to the top deck. Don’t worry, there are cameras here pointed at the baggage area, so you could still keep an eye on your bag.

Travel time is 60 to 90 minutes, depending on where you are alighting and the traffic situation at the time.

4. Alight at the stop closest to your hotel.

Check which of these stops is closest to your hotel.

That’s it! You may simply walk to your hotel or inn if it’s located close to Chatham Road South or Nathan Road.

AIRPORT TO TSIM SHA TSUI BY AIRPORT EXPRESS & MTR

If the bus is the easiest option, the Airport Express is the fastest. There are two possible routes. But both involve a transfer or two.

The Airport Express has only three stops from the airport:

  • Tsing Yi Station
  • Kowloon Station, just outside Tsim Sha Tsui
  • Hong Kong Station, the last stop, located in the Central district.

You can purchase tickets on site, but it’s much cheaper to book online.

As you can see, you’ll end up saving a lot if you book a round trip ticket instead of two one-way tickets. You’ll also save more — as much as HK$ 20 — if you purchase online!

GET DISCOUNTED AIRPORT EXPRESS TICKETS HERE!

But hold on, what station should you choose when booking? Well, that depends on your final destination.

Before you book, check if your hotel is closer to the Airport Express Kowloon Station OR to MTR Tsim Sha Tsui Station.

Airport Express Stops in Tsim Sha TsuiAirport Express Stops in Tsim Sha Tsui

  • If your hotel is closer to Kowloon Station, select Kowloon Station. You can simply walk to your hotel from the station.
  • If your hotel is closer to MTR Tsim Sha Tsui Station, then choose Hong Kong Station or Tsing Yi Station depending on your preferred route.
    – The Tsing Yi route is cheaper but it takes a bit longer and involves two transfers.
    – The Hong Kong route is a bit faster, with only one transfer, but more expensive.

If your hotel is close to the Tsim Sha Tsui Station, I recommend the Hong Kong route. It’s just much easier for me. The Tsing Yi route may be cheaper, but I dislike making two transfers especially when I have heavy luggage in tow especially at rush hours. One of the transfers is at Lai King Station, which is in the middle of the very crowded Tsuen Wan Line, so it can be quite overwhelming if it’s your first day.

Passing through Hong Kong Station entails just one transfer, but it involves a 7-10-minute walk to Central Station. The good news is, it’s generally flat and indoors. And Central Station is the very first stop of the Tsuen Wan Line, which means the ride will be comfortable.

Whatever you choose, you’ll need to look for the Airport Express Station, directly in front of the Arrival Hall.

Hong Kong Airport Express Station TicketsHong Kong Airport Express Station Tickets

Hong Kong Airport Express QR Code Ticket ScanHong Kong Airport Express QR Code Ticket Scan

If you booked online, just scan your QR code at the electronic gates as you enter. Then follow the directions below.

Via Kowloon Station

Kowloon Station isn’t in Tsim Sha Tsui, but there is a part of TST that is close to it. If your hotel in this area near Kowloon Station, lucky you! It’ll be a quick journey for you.

  1. Board the Airport Express.
  2. Alight at Kowloon Station.
  3. Walk to your hotel.

Easy, right?

Via Hong Kong Station

  1. Board the Airport Express.
  2. Alight at Hong Kong Station.
  3. Transfer to Central Station. (Walk for 7-10 minutes. Just follow the signs.)
  4. Take the MTR Tsuen Line to Tsim Sha Tsui Station or Jordan Station, whichever is closer to your hotel.
  5. Get off at your stop.

Note: While you can use your QR code to board the Airport Express, you’ll need to use an Octopus card or buy a separate ticket when transferring to the MTR Tsuen Wan Line.

Again, the Central Station is the first station on the Tsuen Wan Line, so it’s very likely that you’ll get a seat on the train.

That’s it!

There used to be a FREE shuttle service carrying passengers from Kowloon Station or Hong Kong Station to various spots around the city, but this has been discontinued. Regardless, the Airport Express is indeed the fastest way to get to the city center.

From the airport, it only takes 32 minutes to Hong Kong Station. But you’ll need to add the transfer time and the travel time from Central Station to your hotel. It should still take you almost an hour in total.

Via Tsing Yi Station

This is the cheapest train option. (The bus is still the cheapest overall, though!)

  1. Board the Airport Express.
  2. Alight at Tsing Yi Station.
  3. Switch to Tung Chung Line (orange line).
  4. Alight at Lai King Station.
  5. Switch to Tsuen Wan Line (red line).
  6. Alight at Tsim Sha Tsui or Jordan Station.

The downside is, this route entails two transfers, which some people might not prefer, especially those with heavy luggage in tow, and I’m assuming you do because you’re coming from the airport.

It’s just difficult getting on and off the train multiple times while carrying a bag, even more so when it is crowded on board. Lai King Station is often crowded at peak hours because it is in the middle of the line.

TSIM SHA TSUI TO AIRPORT BY BUS

It’s easy to return to the airport from Tsim Sha Tsui. Whether you took the bus or the train, all you have to do is trace your steps back.

If by bus, just remember to wait for and board the bus on the other side of the road, NOT on the same side where you got off.

Then alight at the Airport Stop.

TSIM SHA TSUI TO AIRPORT BY MTR + AIRPORT EXPRESS

Via Kowloon Station

This only applies if your hotel or point of origin is close to Kowloon Station.

  1. Make your way to Kowloon Station.
  2. Board the Airport Express.
  3. Alight at Hong Kong Airport.

Via Hong Kong Station

If you took the Airport Express via Hong Kong Station, just take the MTR Tsuen Wan Line back to Central Station, and transfer to Hong Kong Station, and catch the Airport Express back to the airport.

  1. Take the MTR Tsuen Wan Line to Central Station.
  2. Transfer to Hong Kong Station.
  3. Board the Airport Express.
  4. Alight at Hong Kong Airport.

Via Tsing Yi Station

If you took the Tsing Yi route, take the same MTR Tsuen Wan Line and trace your steps back.

  1. Take the MTR Tsuen Wan Line to Lai King Station.
  2. Transfer to Tung Chung Line.
  3. Alight at Tsing Yi Station.
  4. Board the Airport Express.
  5. Alight at Hong Kong Airport.

WHICH IS THE BEST ROUTE?

If your hotel is close to Nathan Road or Chatham Road South, I think, hands down, the A21 Bus is the best option. It takes a bit longer, but it is the most convenient and least stressful.

But when going back to the airport, we recommend the MTR and Airport Express.

We don’t recommend taking the A21 Bus when airport-bound. You see, from airport to Kowloon, the bus is always largely empty. But when going back to the airport, Tsim Sha Tsui is in the middle of the route, which means there are fewer seats available onboard.

Not to mention that the bus is subject to traffic conditions so it can take much, much longer, which can be pretty stressful when you have a flight to catch.

On a recent trip, my blogging partner Vins and I even had a mini-contest on who would get to the airport first. Vins took the A21 Bus, while I took the train. And I won by a huge margin. I was already waiting for 40 minutes by the time Vins’s bus reached the airport.

Landscapes by British Women Artists at the Courtauld » Art &…

[ad_1]

Fanny Blake Patterdale Church Courtauld

From 28 January to 20 May 2026, the Courtauld Gallery presents the exhibition “A View of One’s Own: Landscapes by British Women Artists, 1760-1860”

Source: The Courtauld. Image: Fanny Blake: “A rainbow over Patterdale Church, Cumbria”, 1849. Photo @ The Courtauld.

A View of One’s Own showcases landscape drawings and watercolours by British women artists working between 1760 and 1860 whose work represents a growing area of The Courtauld’s collection.

These artists range from highly accomplished amateurs to those ambitious for more formal recognition. They have remained mostly unknown, and their works largely unpublished.

When the Royal Academy was founded in 1768, its members included two women, yet there would not be another female academician until Dame Laura Knight was elected in 1936. Despite this institutional exclusion, women artists in Britain continued to train, practice and exhibit during this period, particularly in the field of landscape watercolours.

This exhibition and its accompanying catalogue shed new light on these artists, working within a heavily male dominated era in the arts. Some of the artists achieved recognition during their lifetimes while others’ work remained private, until later discovered.

10 artists are featured in the exhibition. They include Harriet Lister and Lady Mary Lowther, who were among the first to depict the Lake District; Amelia Long, Lady Farnborough, one of the first British artists to travel to France following the Napoleonic Wars, and Elizabeth Batty – whose works appearing in the show were only rediscovered a few years ago.

Coworker conflict can disrupt workplace harmony and productivity. To address it effectively, you should start by identifying issues early and recognizing signs of tension. Creating a safe space for open dialogue is essential, as is focusing on specific behaviors rather than personal traits. Comprehending different conflict management styles can likewise guide your approach. By following these steps, you can cultivate a more collaborative environment, but what happens when conflicts arise repeatedly?

Key Takeaways

Key Takeaways

  • Identify subtle cues of conflict early to prevent escalation and address issues proactively.
  • Create a safe space for communication to encourage open dialogue and minimize defensiveness.
  • Focus on specific behaviors rather than personal traits to reduce defensiveness during discussions.
  • Engage in problem-solving collaboratively, targeting the situation instead of personal grievances.
  • Follow up after resolution to reinforce accountability and assess adherence to agreements made.

Identify Workplace Conflict Early

Identifying workplace conflict early is crucial, as unresolved issues can escalate and lead to larger problems within a team. Conflicts often start with subtle cues like passive resistance, miscommunication, or changes in body language. By recognizing these signs early, you can address issues before they spiral out of control.

A recent survey revealed that 23% of respondents left jobs because of workplace conflict, emphasizing the need for timely intervention. If you’re wondering how to deal with coworker conflict, consider how you resolve a conflict with a coworker effectively. Early intervention not only prevents emotional buildup but additionally encourages a culture of openness, enhancing team dynamics.

Furthermore, addressing conflicts swiftly can save organizations significant costs, as American Express businesses lose $359 billion annually because of unresolved issues. Prioritizing early identification allows you to maintain a healthier work environment and improve overall team performance.

Create a Safe Space to Talk

To create a safe space for conversations, start by choosing a neutral environment, like a quiet meeting room or a private Zoom call.

This setting encourages open communication, allowing both parties to express their thoughts without interruptions.

Neutral Meeting Environment

Creating a neutral meeting environment is essential for nurturing constructive discussions when conflicts arise among coworkers. A quiet meeting room or a private Zoom call can set the stage for comfortable dialogue, reducing distractions and tensions.

Before the meeting, clearly communicate its goals to encourage participants to focus on resolution rather than defensiveness. This preparation helps minimize fear of misunderstanding or dismissal, which often hinders effective communication.

When managers cultivate a safe space for these discussions, they considerably reduce emotional buildup and contribute to a culture of openness within their teams. By prioritizing a neutral setting, you pave the way for respectful conversations, ultimately leading to more productive conflict resolution and improved relationships among coworkers.

Encourage Open Communication

How can open communication help resolve coworker conflicts? Creating a safe space for dialogue is vital. By setting up neutral environments, like quiet meeting rooms or private Zoom calls, you encourage honest exchanges.

Allowing both parties to share their perspectives without interruptions reduces defensiveness and promotes comprehension. Clearly stating the meeting’s goal improves collaboration, setting the tone for constructive discussions.

This culture of respect is fundamental for effectively addressing conflicts, preventing emotional buildup that may lead to further issues. As a manager, maintaining this atmosphere of safety and openness will likely yield positive outcomes, as employees will feel supported in voicing their concerns.

In the end, open communication can lead to resolutions and improved workplace relationships.

Use Behavior-Based Conflict Resolution, Not Personal Attacks

When conflicts arise at work, it’s essential to focus on actions rather than personal traits.

By addressing specific behaviors, like saying, “The team struggled to communicate effectively,” you encourage a more constructive dialogue.

This approach not just reduces defensiveness but likewise promotes clarity, making it easier to find solutions without resorting to personal attacks.

Focus on Actions Only

Focusing on actions rather than personal attributes is essential for effectively resolving coworker conflicts. When you concentrate on behaviors, you reduce defensiveness and promote constructive dialogue.

Here are some strategies to reflect upon:

  • Use behavior-based language to emphasize the issue.
  • State specific actions and their consequences, like “The project was delayed because of differing views.”
  • Separate the person from their actions to lower defensiveness.
  • Encourage accountability by discussing the impact of specific behaviors.
  • Aim for collaboration by keeping discussions focused on solutions.

Avoid Personal Labels

To effectively resolve conflicts with coworkers, avoiding personal labels is crucial since it helps maintain a constructive atmosphere. Emphasizing behaviors rather than personal attributes can greatly reduce defensiveness during discussions.

For instance, instead of saying, “You never take others’ ideas seriously,” frame the issue as, “The client presentation was delayed because of differing views.” This approach targets the situation rather than attacking personal failings.

Personal attacks can escalate conflict and hinder resolution, so it’s important to separate the individual from their actions. By using behavior-based language, you’re more likely to engage in problem-solving rather than getting entrenched in personal grievances.

This aligns with the Thomas-Kilmann Conflict Model, highlighting the significance of effective communication styles in resolving disputes.

Promote Constructive Dialogue

Promoting constructive dialogue is key to resolving conflicts effectively in the workplace. By focusing on specific behaviors rather than personal attacks, you can encourage productive conversations.

Here are some tips to help you engage in constructive dialogue:

  • Discuss actions, not character traits.
  • Use “I” statements to express feelings, like “I feel ignored” instead of “You never listen.”
  • Aim to understand the other person’s perspective.
  • Stay focused on the issue at hand to avoid sidetracking the conversation.
  • Maintain a respectful tone, separating the person from the problem.

This behavior-based approach lowers defensiveness and nurtures collaboration, leading to a healthier work environment where everyone feels valued and heard.

Understand Different Conflict Management Styles at Work

Conflict management styles play an important role in how disputes are handled in the workplace. The Thomas-Kilmann Conflict Model identifies five key styles: Avoiding, Accommodating, Competing, Compromising, and Collaborating.

Avoiding may lead to unresolved tensions, whereas Accommodating can cause individuals to feel unheard if overused. Competing allows for quick decisions in crises but risks damaging relationships, making context vital before choosing this approach.

Compromising seeks a middle ground, which can be effective but may not fully satisfy either party. Collaborating, in contrast, encourages win-win solutions by valuing both goals and relationships, making it ideal for complex issues requiring input from various stakeholders.

Follow Up After Resolving Workplace Conflict

Following up after resolving workplace conflict is essential, as it helps guarantee that all parties are genuinely on the same page. A few days after the resolution, check in with the involved coworkers to verify that agreements are being upheld and to address any emerging concerns.

Here are some key reasons to prioritize follow-up:

  • Assess adherence to agreements made during conflict resolution.
  • Identify any new issues that may have surfaced.
  • Reinforce accountability and commitment to a positive work environment.
  • Encourage open dialogue, demonstrating that both perspectives are valued.
  • Strengthen relationships and improve team cohesion over time.

Regular follow-ups not only show your commitment to maintaining a healthy workplace but also help prevent future conflicts from escalating.

Train Managers to Handle Conflict Resolution Effectively

Effective conflict resolution is a critical skill that managers must develop to maintain a harmonious workplace. Training equips you with vital skills, enabling you to respond calmly and mediate disputes effectively.

Comprehending various conflict styles, as outlined in the Thomas-Kilmann Conflict Model, allows you to tailor your approach to specific situations, leading to more positive outcomes. Regular training updates keep you prepared to handle evolving workplace dynamics, minimizing the risk of unresolved conflicts that can cost organizations up to $359 billion annually.

Furthermore, effective conflict resolution training cultivates a collaborative environment where employees feel heard and supported, eventually reducing the need for HR intervention. This investment not merely benefits you as a manager but contributes to a culture of open communication and accountability, crucial for maintaining a healthy work environment.

Prioritizing conflict resolution training can greatly improve team morale and productivity, ensuring a more cohesive workplace.

Turn Workplace Conflict Into a Growth Opportunity

When you view workplace disagreements as opportunities for growth, you open the door to creativity and innovation. Embracing conflict can transform your team dynamics and improve overall performance.

Here are some ways to turn conflict into a growth opportunity:

  • Encourage open dialogue to share diverse perspectives.
  • Identify blind spots and hidden frustrations through proactive resolution.
  • Cultivate resilience and adaptability by learning from each situation.
  • Reflect on conflicts to understand their causes and lessons learned.
  • Strengthen team cohesion by collaborating on improved solutions.

Having Kids Is The Best Way To Decumulate Wealth When FIRE

0

[ad_1]

If you are a FIRE adherent, then you have likely mastered the art of saving and investing aggressively. While your neighbors and colleagues splurge on new cars, fancy vacations, and clothes, you are quietly deploying your excess cash flow into index funds, private investments, and real estate. You buy every dip. You dollar cost average through bear markets.

Over time, something unexpected happens. You begin to love investing more than you love spending.

That love affair with investing is one of the main reasons FIRE works. You train yourself to delay gratification. You learn to enjoy watching your net worth grow faster than your consumption. Eventually, spending money on yourself can start to feel almost wasteful, even when you can easily afford it.

However, once you reach FIRE, a new challenge emerges. You must learn how to decumulate your wealth in a healthy, sustainable way. If you do not, you risk dying with far too much money relative to the life you lived. After a lifetime of saving and optimizing, flipping the mental switch to spend more is surprisingly difficult. You cannot simply wake up one day and become a carefree consumer.

What I have realized after being a father for almost nine years is that there is a remarkably effective solution to this problem.

If you want to decumulate wealth more easily in FIRE, have children. And if you already have children, consider having more children if you want to really spend more money.

For years, I’ve considered myself frugal, occasionally to a fault. This has led me to believe I needed to spend more aggressively, even if I don’t want to. Yet after running the numbers, I realized I’ve been far more spendy than I thought since 2017. All it took was a change of perspective.

Most Expenses Go Toward Raising Kids

At the beginning of each year, FIRE parents tend to run through a familiar checklist.

  • We estimate our annual investment income and projected expenses.
  • We review our investment outlook for real estate, stocks, and private investments, which remain our two primary risk assets.
  • We determine the appropriate size of our Pressure Release Valve, the amount we are comfortable spending beyond our base budget.
  • We get a free financial review of our investments with Empower or any trusted advisor to sanity check our assumptions.

When I recently reviewed our household expenses, something jumped out immediately. Roughly 60 to 70 percent of our annual spending is now directly attributable to raising our two children and supporting my wife as the primary caregiver. Only about 30 to 40 percent of our spending goes toward my wife and me as individuals.

Put differently, we are spending about 100 to130 percent more per year than we would comfortably need to if it were just the two of us. That realization alone helped me understand why decumulating wealth no longer feels forced. It feels natural.

Kids Are Fantastic for Making You Spend More Money

To illustrate the point more clearly, let us walk through some hypothetical numbers.

My wife and I could live comfortably on $10,000 a month in San Francisco if we did not have children. Here is a basic budget.

  • $5,000 for rent for a two bedroom place
  • $500 for miscellaneous expenses

That is a great lifestyle with no kids. I’m not sure we’d actually spend this much, but I’m trying to be conservative here.

Since we are already financially independent, we do not need to save for retirement. To cover $120,000 a year in after tax expenses, we would need to generate roughly $150,000 in gross investment income.

Using a 4 percent to 5 percent withdrawal rate, that implies a required investment portfolio of approximately $2.4 million to $3.75 million.

Now let us layer children on top.

Needing a Bigger House With Two Kids

A two bedroom, two bathroom condo works fine for a family of four on vacation. That is exactly the size of the in-law unit I remodeled in Honolulu so we have a more comfortable place to stay when visiting my parents.

But living full time in a two bedroom place with two children is suboptimal. One of our children does not sleep well and will reliably wake up the other if they share a room. Over time, sleep deprivation becomes a real cost.

Naturally, most families with two kids want at least a three bedroom, two bathroom home, if not a four or five bedroom house. Based on the rental properties I own in San Francisco, I know that a three bedroom home on the west side rents for around $7,500 a month, while a five bedroom, four bathroom home can easily cost $10,000 a month or more.

I also want a dedicated home office to write. That pushes me toward the larger home to raise kids. The extra bedroom and bathroom for visiting friends and family is another benefit.

Just like that, housing costs jump by roughly $5,000 a month, or $60,000 a year.

Hooray for decumulation.

Kids Need to Eat Healthy

Our admittedly generous $2,000 a month food budget jumps to about $3,000 a month once you add two more mouths to feed.

Yes, we could reduce our own food spending. But food is expensive now, especially in coastal cities. Eating out and ordering delivery have become meaningfully pricier over the past few years. When you have kids, you also tend to prioritize healthier food options, which often cost more.

That is another $12,000 a year in spending. We are now at $72,000 a year in additional decumulation.

Kids Need to Be Transported in a Safe Vehicle

From 2014 through 2017, I drove a Honda Fit that I leased for $240 a month. I loved that car. It was nimble, inexpensive, and could fit into parking spots that larger cars simply could not.

However, the doors were paper thin, and there was very little buffer between the rear seats and the back of the car. Once we had our first child, there was no way I would feel comfortable driving that vehicle with a baby in the back.

When the lease ended, we returned the car and bought a $60,000 Range Rover Sport in cash. If you convert that purchase into a lease equivalent, it works out to about $1,000 a month.

That means our transportation costs increased by roughly $760 a month, or $9,120 a year.

Without kids, we would happily drive a small, inexpensive car indefinitely. With kids, safety takes precedence.

We are now up to $81,120 a year in extra spending.

Travel Gets More Expensive With Kids

Travel costs increase significantly once you add children.

A studio hotel room with one king size bed is no longer viable if you want a relaxing vacation for a family of four. Airfare alone adds $2,000 to $3,000 a year for two additional economy tickets if you travel twice annually.

Then there is lodging. If you travel 50 days a year, upgrading from a studio to a one bedroom or two bedroom suite can easily cost an extra $500 to $1,000 per night.

That translates to an additional $25,000 to $50,000 a year.

Let us be conservative and assume kids add $27,000 a year in travel expenses. That brings our total incremental spending to $108,120 a year. Once international travel becomes more frequent, airfare alone could add another $5,000 or more annually.

Kids Enjoy Enrichment and Extracurricular Activities

Even if you have abundant time, you cannot teach your children everything. Many parents choose to invest in extracurricular activities like music lessons, martial arts, sports, or dance.

These lessons often cost $40 to $100 per hour per child. If each child averages 50 hours of instruction a year, that is $2,000 to $5,000 per child, or $4,000 to $10,000 annually for two kids.

We are now looking at $112,120 to $118,120 in additional spending. I consider this the basic core extra spending, equivalent to a 100% increase in spending.

Although if you are FIRE, you can certainly run your own Daddy Day Camp and teach many skills yourself to save money. So far, I have spent at least one hour a week since my kids were three teaching them tennis, pickleball, soccer, swimming, and how to ride a bike. B

Independent Grade School Education (100% Optional)

If your net worth and passive income allow, you may consider independent grade school education. After all, education is key to helping children launch independently into adulthood.

In San Francisco, the cheapest religious schools run about $12,000 a year. Most independent schools are closer to $45,000 annually. While all the non-parochial high schools I see cost $55,000 a year in tuition. For two children, that is an extra $24,000 to $115,000 a year.

Add that to the prior expenses and total incremental spending rises to between $142,120 and $223,120 per year.

That represents 118 percent to 185 percent more annual spending than the original $120,000 baseline my wife and I would need on our own. Total household spending now ranges from $262,120 to $343,120. You now need between $5.24 to $8.58 million in investments to sustain your FIRE lifestyle with two kids.

Again, these are hypothetical numbers, but not far off for the typical middle class family living in an expensive city like San Francisco or New York City. Here in San Francisco, the city has launched free child care for a family of four making less than $230,000 a year. Meanwhile, those earning up to $310,000 a year will receive a 50% subsidy.

In other words, earning $300,000 – $350,000 gross in an expensive city like San Francisco is firmly middle class for a family of four. One of the benefits of having a mayor who grew up extremely wealthy is that he doesn’t flinch at higher income numbers.

The Balance Between Spending and Being Responsible

Let us say you have a $10 million net worth, with $8 million invested outside your primary residence. On paper, a 4 percent to 5 percent withdrawal rate should comfortably support this level of spending for decades.

In reality, most people I know would want 50% to 100% more to feel truly secure while spending at this level. It’s almost always more. The irony is that many people with $10 million or more in their 40s or older are also actively searching for ways to decumulate wealth without guilt.

They know they are already near the top 1 percent net worth amount. Therefore, they want to live more fully while still behaving responsibly.

Children solve this psychological problem elegantly.

When you spend money on your kids, it does not feel as indulgent. It feels purposeful. It feels honorable. You are investing in people you love more than anything in the world.

In contrast, most FIRE followers would struggle to consistently increase personal spending by even 20 percent. Spending 50 percent more on yourself every year would feel excessive. Spending 150 percent more would be impossible.

Children open the floodgates.

The Most Satisfying Ways to Decumulate

In my experience, the most effective way FIRE parents decumulate wealth is by upgrading their housing. A nicer home may not make you happier day to day, but it often increases satisfaction as a provider. Watching your children run freely in a safe neighborhood with space to play is deeply rewarding.

Your bigger house will usually come with higher property taxes and ongoing maintenance costs, which consistently put pressure on your finances. Just as you must diligently save and invest on your way to FIRE, a house forces you to diligently spend on your way out.

The second most gratifying splurge is a reliable, safe vehicle. Cars depreciate, but they offer convenience, flexibility, and peace of mind that families value immensely. They are a must for families. I only fully appreciated how much we rely on a car every day once mine started causing my endless electrical problems.

The most debated expense remains independent education. If you find a great private school that fits your child and is close to home, it can be invaluable. However, if you do not earn at least seven times the net annual tuition per child and are not yet FIRE, the tradeoff may not be worth it.

But from a decumulation point of view, spending on tuition is a great way to get rid of your money. It’s like paying $10 for a bottle of Evian when there is endless tap water to drink for free. There’s no guaranteed pay off for either.

Doing a Solid Job Decumulating

After reviewing our finances, I now realize we are doing a reasonable job decumulating our wealth. We are spending at least 120 percent more every year than we would have if it was just my wife and me.

The one area where I could spend more is upgrading to a new family car. But after spending $1,700 and over a month repairing our 2015 Range Rover Sport with only 67,500 miles, I cannot bring myself to do it yet.

If another correction or bear market occurs, we accelerate our net worth decumulation. However, I suspect the real challenge will be spending instead of investing when that inevitable decline arrives. “Unfortunately” for decumulation purposes, the stock market has had a good run since our first child was born in 2017. Therefore, our net worth is higher despite our increased spending.

As a parent, you eventually realize that money is no longer primarily for you. When you analyze your expenses honestly, you may discover that you already spend as much or more on your children than on yourself.

And if your goal is to decumulate wealth in FIRE, that might be exactly how it should be.

Reader Questions

If you are already financially independent, what has been the hardest part about actually spending more money without guilt?

For FIRE parents, what category has surprised you the most in terms of how much more you spend once kids entered the picture: housing, transportation, education, or travel?

Do you think spending more on your children brings greater long term satisfaction than spending the same amount on yourself? Why or why not?

For those still on the FIRE path, would the increased cost of children change your target number,? Or do you view kids as part of the decumulation plan once independence is reached?
