The Untold Story of a Visionary’s Role in Launching Careers from Amateur Talent to Global Fame

A Personal Journey of Mentorship and the Rise of Incredible Talent

When I started The Westchester Talent Competition and later my TV show, SuperStar USA, I had one goal: to create a platform where young, aspiring artists could showcase their talent and start building their dreams. I’ve always believed in the power of raw talent combined with opportunity, and over the years, I’ve been fortunate to see so many incredible individuals walk through those doors, take the stage, and rise to heights they might not have imagined.

One of those individuals is Lakeesha Rice, though I first knew her as Lakeesha Fuller, a little girl with big dreams. When she came to us, her talent was raw and unfiltered, but her intention and desire was undeniable. Even as a child, she had a presence that demanded attention. Watching her journey from that moment when I first introduced her to a Public Access television audience, and then to see where she is now has been one of the greatest joys of my life. She went from winning nine first-place titles at the Apollo Theater and appearing on Soul Train and BET Teen Summit, to becoming a powerful gospel artist. Of course, the road wasn’t easy for her—early record deals and industry challenges threatened to derail her. But Lakeesha kept pushing, and today, she’s even made waves in gospel music as a top-finalist on BET’s Sunday Best and the artist behind inspiring singles like “Hallelujah.” Seeing her light up church stages, television screens, and TikTok reminds me of the resilience it takes to succeed through the ages and why platforms like mine are so important.

Then there’s Mike Phillips. I remember when Mike first performed on SuperStar USA. His saxophone playing was electric, and it was clear he was destined for something much bigger than our stage. Over the years, I’ve watched Mike grow into one of the most recognized saxophonists in the world. He’s performed with legends like Stevie Wonder and Jill Scott, played in stadiums around the globe with Prince, and even had a Jordan sneaker branded with his name. But one moment stands out to me: when Prince showed up to one of Mike’s cozy club performances just to show him love and appreciation. That’s the level Mike has reached—where even icons come to celebrate his artistry. Whether it’s his stunning rendition of the national anthem or his soulful performances in intimate venues, Mike’s career is proof that talent, when nurtured, can take you anywhere. If you were lucky, you hung out with us at Starbucks, Inn Conyers, when I asked Mike to come and perform for a standing room only audience! That’s another encounter that I will never forget.

As I look back on these stories and so many others, I can’t help but feel proud of the role I played in their early days. My platforms were never just about giving people a place to perform. I wanted to create an environment where they could grow, where they could see themselves as the stars they were meant to be. It wasn’t always easy—balancing professionalism with the energy and unpredictability of young talent is no small feat. But when I see people like Lakeesha and Mike thriving, I know it was all worth it.

This journey has been about more than just me or the stages I created. It’s about the ripple effect of giving someone a chance, of believing in them when they’re just starting out. It’s about planting a seed and watching it grow into something extraordinary. Seeing these artists shine on a global level reminds me why I started this journey in the first place. And I’ll always take pride in knowing that, in some small way, I helped set the stage for their success. And it ain’t over. The party’s not over!
