10 Ways To Save On Your Taxes Before The End Of The Year

10 Ways To Save On Taxes

We’re approaching the end of the year, so now’s the time to make plans to save on your taxes and influence your tax situation.

I’m not talking about going Donald Trump-style and losing lots of money to offset your gains. I’m talking about some practical actions you can take today that will lower your tax bill for the year.

So, without losing a bunch of money, here are ten different ways that you can save on your taxes before the end of the year.

1. Boost Your 401k Contribution

One of the best ways to save on your tax bill today is to contribute to your 401k or 403b. These accounts allow you to save pre-tax money for retirement. The result? You pay less in taxes today because the money grows tax free until you withdraw it in retirement.

For 2024, the 401k contribution limit is $23,000, but if you’re over 50 years old, you can make an additional $7,500 catch up contribution.

If you’re not at the limit yet, adding to your 401k is a great way to save money AND save on your taxes.

And remember, the 401k contribution limits change each year, so check them out here: 401k Contribution Limits.

2. Max Out Your Traditional IRA

Along the same lines as a 401k, you can contribute to a traditional IRA and lower your taxable income. Deciding whether to contribute to a Roth or Traditional IRA can be tough, but if you’re thinking about just this year’s taxes, then using a traditional is the way to go.

For 2024, you can contribute $7,000 to an IRA if you’re under age 50, and $8,000 if you’re over age 50.

And remember, while there are no income limits to contribute to a traditional IRA, there are income limits that might prevent you from deducting your contribution.

Learn about the IRA contribution and limits here.

3. Max Out Your SEP IRA Or Solo 401k

If you’re a side hustler, it’s essential that you take advantage of a SEP IRA or Solo 401k to lower your taxable income. Side hustles are great (and here’s a list of 50 you can try), but it’s important to remember that most of that income doesn’t have taxes withheld, so you’re going to face a large tax bill on your side hustle money.

By contributing to a SEP IRA or Solo 401k, you can defer some of that money into the future and avoid paying taxes on it today. It’s a great way to, not only save, but to lower your tax bill this year.

Contributing to a SEP IRA is easy, and you can do so all the way until April 15. Setting up a solo 401k is a bit harder, and you have to have your plan setup by the end of the year to be able to make contributions to it. But you can also save a LOT more money.

In 2024, with a SEP IRA, you can save 25% of your income, up to $69,000 per year. With a Solo 401k, you can save up to $69,000 per year as well!

4. Max Out Your HSA

We’re huge fans of using your Health Savings Account to save for retirement. If you have the ability to max out your HSA this year, make sure that you contribute as much as possible. And remember, if you can afford it, don’t get your reimbursements this year. Save your receipts and let the money in your HSA grow for you.

A reminder – the HSA is like your IRA, and you can actually make your 2024 contributions all the way until April 15, 2025.

In 2024, you can contribute up to $4,150 if you’re single, and $8,300 if you’re a family. If you’re over 55, you also get a $1,000 catch-up contribution. Read the full HSA Contribution Limits here.

5. Save For Your Children’s College

Contributing to your child’s 529 plan is a great way to save for college, but it’s also a potential tax benefit to you. If you live in one of the 32 states that offers tax deferred 529 plan contributions, this can be a great way to lower your state income tax bill.

While the Federal government doesn’t offer any deductions for contributing to a 529, many states do.

Contributions to a 529 plan are considered gifts, and so the limits for contribution are based on the gift tax exemption.

You can contribute up to $18,000 per child, per year, per person gifting. So, married couples could contribute $36,000 per child, per year. There’s also a 5 year contribution rule, where you can give a full $90,000 per child in one lump sum, and it counts as a contribution for the next five years.

Learn more about 529 Plan Contribution Limits here.

6. Make Energy Efficient Improvements To Your Home

If you make energy efficient improvements to your home, you can qualify for tax credits that can help you save on your taxes this year.

In 2024, you can get up to $3,200 in tax credits, depending on what you do.

The maximum credit you can claim this year is:

  • $1,200 for energy property costs and certain energy efficient home improvements, with limits on doors ($250 per door and $500 total), windows ($600) and home energy audits ($150)
  • $2,000 per year for qualified heat pumps, biomass stoves or biomass boilers

All of these credits can help you offset your income and can provide great savings. Learn more about these tax credits here.

7. Maximize Your Work-Related Expense Deductions

The fact is, most people are terrible about keeping track of their expenses. I’m not saying that you should spend more so you can deduct your expenses – I’m simply saying you need to keep track and deduct what’s correct.

Some work related deductions that you can potentially take:

  • Transportation and travel – mileage is one that a lot of people miss or forget to calculate
  • Meals and entertainment
  • Union and professional dues
  • Uniforms, if your employer doesn’t reimburse you and they can’t be worn outside of work
  • Work-related educational expenses, especially if continuing education is required by your job

The same rules apply if you work for yourself. For example, if you drive for Uber or Lyft, you should be keeping accurate track of your mileage and expenses related to driving. These will all offset your income and help lower your tax bill.

So, keep track of your expenses and save money.

8. Donate To Charity

Another great way to save is simply by donating to charity. Your donations of both cash and things can be deducted from your taxes. However, for 2024, there is no way to claim charitable contributions without itemizing your tax return.

So, right now, start doing some fall cleaning, get organized, and see what you don’t need anymore. Some rules of thumb include:

  • Clothes you haven’t worn in a year
  • Old children’s clothes or toys they don’t use anymore
  • Items sitting in your garage unused for a year

Take these items to a local charity, save your receipt, and deduct your donation on your tax return.

9. Sell Your Loser Stocks…

Now, I know I mentioned up top to not be a loser like Donald Trump and take huge losses simply to avoid taxes. But…even good investors have poor performing stocks. Now’s a great time to look at your portfolio and sell some losers to take the capital loss.

This strategy is called tax loss harvesting.

It can be an effective strategy, especially if you have a lot of capital gains in your portfolio from earlier in the year.

When you do it, make sure you’re being mindful of the capital gains tax brackets.

But on the flip side…

10. Wait To Rebalance Your Portfolio

This sounds odd, but wait until the new year to rebalance your portfolio. You see, many mutual funds and ETFs pay out their dividends and capital gains in December. If you sell your losers at the end of the year, simply wait until January before deploying that money.

If you buy into a mutual fund or ETF right before the distribution, you are effectively buying yourself a tax burden. Since the distributions are a part of the Net Asset Value (NAV) anyway, you’re not missing much by waiting just a couple weeks.

Here’s our guide to rebalancing your portfolio across multiple accounts.

Things To Consider For Next Year

There are some things you just can’t change this year (maybe you’ve already sold some stocks or had other gains), but right now is typically open enrollment for many people. And that means there are changes that you can make for next year.

If lowering your taxable income is a goal for you, consider making these changes during open enrollment:

  • Maximize Your 401k Contribution
  • Choose a High Deductible Health Care Plan with an HSA
  • Maximize Your HSA
  • If you have children, take advantage of a Dependent Spending Account for child care costs
  • If you commute to work, consider a Transportation Spending Account if eligible

What else? What are you doing to lower your taxable income each year?

Homemade Aloe Vera Lotion

0

[ad_1]

I try to hydrate and drink plenty of minerals (including salt water), but sometimes my skin needs a little more hydration. This aloe vera lotion softens dry skin and leaves skin feeling moisturized. It works great as a body lotion or a face lotion. Even better, it contains just a few simple ingredients!

This moisturizing lotion combines organic aloe vera gel, rich shea butter, and nourishing almond oil. All without the parabens, sulfates, and dimethicone found in many store-bought skin care products.

Aloe Vera Body Lotion

As the weather gets cooler many of us find our skin gets drier. Living in a humid climate I don’t have this problem as much anymore. However, sometimes my skin needs some light hydration. While I love lotion bars and this homemade lotion for intense nourishing, this aloe lotion is great when you want something lighter.

Aloe has a similar feeling to glycerin in skin care recipes, but it doesn’t feel quite as sticky. It absorbs well into the skin without leaving a greasy feeling. If you’re using fresh aloe from a plant, this lotion will only last a week or two before it goes bad. Aloe vera gel sold in stores and online is preserved and will last longer, up to 6 weeks.

Skin Benefits of Aloe Vera

I keep an aloe plant in my home because I love them so much! Not only are they great for treating burns, but they work well for other skin irritations. You’ve probably used aloe vera gel at some point to soothe a sunburn.

Aloe barbadensis leaf juice is rich in nutrients like potassium, vitamin C, vitamin E, beta-carotene, and antioxidants. It also helps our skin create hyaluronic acid and boosts collagen production to keep skin firm and wrinkle-free. Aloe helps skin be more elastic and supple so it “bounces back.”

Ingredient Options

This lotion can also be used as a face cream. It can work well for those with acne or eczema too, depending on the exact ingredients you use. Oils like olive and avocado oil are great for dry or more mature skin types. If you’re prone to acne or want to reduce the appearance of wrinkles, then adding some rosehip seed oil is a good choice. I prefer sweet almond (non-greasy) or jojoba, which mimics skin’s sebum and sinks into the skin nicely.

I use shea butter for an extra rich feel, but it’s optional. You could also use cocoa butter or mango butter instead. Cocoa butter is more intensely moisturizing, while mango butter is very light and absorbs fast.

Homemade Aloe Vera Lotion

This aloe-based lotion is smooth and lighter than some options. Great for all skin types and even little ones!

Yield: 6.5 ounces

Author: Katie Wells

  • Melt the beeswax, oil, and shea butter (if using) in a double boiler or glass bowl over a pan of water.

  • Remove from heat and pour into a blender or mason jar (if using an immersion blender). You can also use a stand mixer for this.

  • Add the vitamin E (if using) and any essential oils.

  • Let cool to room temperature. You want it to be room temperature and just barely starting to harden around the edges. This will help make sure that the lotion emulsifies correctly.

  • Add the Leucidal complete to the aloe if using.

  • Start blending on low using a blender or immersion blender. Very slowly, start adding room temperature aloe vera gel until incorporated. Use a spatula to wipe down the sides and re-blend a few times until fully incorporated.

  • Store in a glass jar in the fridge for up to six weeks.

If your family goes through a lot of lotion then feel free to double the recipe.

Preserving and Storing the Lotion

Vitamin E helps the oils from oxidizing as fast but will not preserve the lotion. If you want to use a natural preservative you can add some Leucidal complete to slow microbe growth. With the preservative, it should last for several months in the fridge.

As always, be sure to keep in a cool, dark place away from direct light and heat. Bathroom counters in moist bathrooms are not the best place! And only use clean fingers to apply.

Try making homemade non-toxic sunscreen too.

Have you ever made your own lotion before? Leave a comment and let me know!

Oklahoma Sooners Defense Dominates with Aggressive Play and …

0

[ad_1]

The Oklahoma Sooners’ defense gave fans exactly what they’ve been waiting for: a dominant, aggressive performance that stifled the opposing offense and created chaos from start to finish. In a game that highlighted the relentless style of play characteristic of a Brent Venables-led unit, the Sooners’ defense, under first-year defensive coordinator Zac Alley, looked every bit like a championship-caliber group. Alley, who called every defensive play, demonstrated his ability to craft a game plan that perfectly embodied the spirit of Venables’ defensive philosophy.

The Sooners allowed a mere 80 yards and forced four turnovers in the first half alone. This wasn’t just a case of lucky breaks; it was a systematic dismantling of the opposing offense. The defensive front set the tone early with tackles for loss, sacks, and constant pressure that left the opposing quarterback under duress all evening. Passes were tipped, and the defense swarmed to the ball, making life difficult for every offensive player they faced.

Key contributors like Kendel Dolby and Robert Spears-Jennings were instrumental in executing this aggressive game plan. Spears-Jennings, in particular, was all over the field, recovering a fumble and being a constant disruptive force. The secondary wasn’t to be outdone, as Kani Walker showcased his ball-hawking skills with a crucial interception, and Billy Bowman and Da’Jon Terry each recovered fumbles. Up front, Gracen Halton was a menace, recording two sacks and forcing a fumble, proving that the Sooners’ defensive line could dominate the trenches.

If four turnovers in one half weren’t enough, the Sooners added a fifth on special teams. Lewis Carter delivered a punishing hit on a punt return, forcing another fumble that linebacker Jaren Kanak scooped up and returned for a touchdown. The defensive fireworks didn’t stop there; true freshman Jaydan Hardy capped off the evening with a fourth-quarter interception, bringing the total number of turnovers to six.

Jaren Kana

This type of defensive performance is exactly what the Oklahoma faithful have longed to see—a unit that plays with aggression, speed, and a relentless pursuit of the football. While Brent Venables’ influence is evident, it’s clear that Zac Alley has made his mark by calling a game that kept the opposing offense on its heels throughout. The Sooners’ defense in 2024 has shown they are more than capable of being an ‘SEC-caliber’ defense, filled with depth, talent, and a hunger for creating game-changing plays.

The 2024 Sooners’ defense doesn’t just look like a Brent Venables defense—it feels like it. And with Zac Alley at the helm, calling the shots with the same ferocity and intelligence, the sky’s the limit for this group. This performance was a statement, and if it’s a sign of things to come, Oklahoma’s opponents better be prepared for a long, hard season ahead.

Oyow – BOOOOOOOM! – CREATE * INSPIRE * COMMUNITY * ART * DES…

0

[ad_1]

A selection of images by Seoul-based illustrator Oyow. Working with a variety of clients from around the world, Oyow mainly uses photoshop or stencil printing techniques to create his artwork. He is interested in many motifs, especially the theme of relationships. Sometimes sad, sometimes happy, sometimes light, sometimes complicated, Oyow translates the complexity of relationships into fragmentary but meaningful scenery. He also makes a small book every year.

The motifs of the books differ from one book to the next, with topics ranging from relationships to youth and love, as he draws inspiration from old memories and the by-products of everyday life. In the series, “The Gardeners,” for example, plants and people act as a metaphor for specific types of relationships. In “Blue Owls” he portrays nocturnal animals whose energy continues to burn like fire through the night, reminiscent of young boys and girls grappling with the excitement and anticipation of adolescence and the unknown.

Andrew Tseng – BOOOOOOOM! – CREATE * INSPIRE * COMMUNITY * A…

[ad_1]

A selection of work by Amsterdam-based illustrator and artist Andrew Tseng. While initially studying psychology, Tseng eventually decided to follow his deep desire to pursue art and applied to art school. Whether working on commercial or personal projects, Tseng incorporates his abstract sense of humour and grotesque characters into all of his pieces. He also enjoys experimenting with printmaking techniques (screen printing and risograph printing) as well as ceramics, and often brings that tactile quality into even his digital work.

“My artwork often portrays absurd and theatrical scenes featuring characters with distorted muscular bodies. These characters push the boundaries of masculinity and the human form. The distorted perspectives and melodramatic approach highlight the strangeness of seemingly mundane activities. The characters always wear an eerie, almost flirtatious smile, as if inviting the viewer into their world. Dogs often accompany them, symbolizing man or an idealized version of humanity. These dogs embody strength, loyalty, and self-assuredness, but can also experience profound existential despair when confronted with the meaninglessness of life. This dichotomy often manifests through biting and barking.”

Zach Lieberman: Innovating the Intersection of Art and Techn…

0

[ad_1]

A Journey Rooted in Art and Innovation

Born in 1977, Zach Lieberman grew up just outside of Chicago, where his early fascination with both art and technology began to take shape. This dual passion guided him to pursue a B.A. in Fine Arts from Hunter College, followed by a B.F.A. and an M.F.A. in Design and Technology from Parsons School of Design. These formative years were instrumental in blending his artistic vision with technological prowess, laying the groundwork for his future endeavors.

Lieberman’s career is marked by a series of prestigious exhibitions worldwide. Notable among these are Ars Electronica, Futuresonic, CeBIT, and the Off Festival. One particularly memorable project was “Messa Di Voce,” an interactive audiovisual performance in collaboration with Golan Levin. This project epitomizes how Lieberman’s work consistently pushes the boundaries of audience engagement through innovative use of technology.

The synergy between art and technology is a defining characteristic of Lieberman’s work, evidenced by his numerous exhibitions and projects. His ability to integrate these fields not only enhances the viewer’s experience but also establishes him as a pioneer in the creative coding landscape.

Zach Lieberman: The Genesis of openFrameworks

The creation of openFrameworks stands as a testament to Lieberman’s dedication to democratizing technology for creative use. This open-source C++ library was developed in collaboration with Theo Watson and Arturo Castro. Their collective vision was to build a tool that was both accessible and user-friendly, aimed at empowering artists and developers to explore the creative potential of coding.

Since its inception, openFrameworks has blossomed into a vibrant, global community. The platform’s continuous evolution is driven by contributions from countless artists and technologists, reflecting its foundational ethos of collaboration and open exchange. This community-centric approach has enabled a diverse range of creative projects, expanding the horizons of what can be achieved through technology.

Lieberman’s involvement with openFrameworks not only highlights his technical acumen but also his commitment to fostering a collaborative environment. This project underscores his belief in the power of shared knowledge and the importance of accessible tools in advancing the arts.

Nurturing Innovation Through Residencies and Education

Residencies have played a pivotal role in Lieberman’s career, providing him with unique opportunities to experiment and collaborate. His time at institutions like Ars Electronica Futurelab, Eyebeam, Dance Theater Workshop, and the Hangar Center for the Arts in Barcelona were particularly transformative. These experiences allowed him to push the boundaries of his practice and develop innovative projects alongside other leading artists and technologists.

In 2013, Zach Lieberman co-founded the School for Poetic Computation (SFPC) in New York City. This hybrid space functions as a school, residency, and research group, exploring the intersection of code, design, and art with a focus on poetic expression. SFPC offers intensive, seminar-style sessions where students experiment with electricity, code, and theory, fostering an environment of creative exploration.

Lieberman’s role as an educator extends to teaching graphics programming at Parsons School of Design and serving as an adjunct associate professor at the MIT Media Lab. Through these positions, he inspires the next generation of artists and technologists to explore the poetic possibilities of technology, ensuring that his influence and insights continue to shape the field.

Zach Lieberman: Exploring the Invisible

Lieberman’s work often traverses the boundaries between the visible and invisible, using technology in playful and thought-provoking ways. His “Daily Sketches” project, initiated in 2016, exemplifies this approach. These abstract animations, created through custom software, surprise and engage viewers by bringing the unseen into the realm of perception.

Recognition of Lieberman’s innovative contributions includes prestigious awards and distinctions. The Golden Nica in Interactive Art for the Eyewriter project in 2010 is a standout, honoring his efforts in developing a tool that allows individuals with paralysis to draw using their eyes. Similarly, being named one of Fast Company’s “100 Most Creative People in Business” in 2010 underscores the broader impact of his work on the creative industry.

Lieberman’s recent solo exhibition, “Future Sketches” at ARTECHOUSE DC, further illustrates his exploration of technological play. This exhibit showcased installations like “Manual Input Sessions” and “Re-Coded,” highlighting the iterative and collaborative nature of his practice. By featuring work from his students and other artists, “Future Sketches” underscored the communal and evolving aspect of Lieberman’s artistic journey.

Cops search for suspect in weekend machete attack on Bronx s…

0

[ad_1]

A machete-wielding suspect launched an early morning assault on another straphanger on a Bronx subway over the weekend – around two years after he allegedly stabbed another victim in a transit hate attack, cops said.

Runadieo Jordan, 54, is accused of pulling the sharp weapon and slashing the 31-year-old man on a northbound 2 train at around 1:15 a.m. Saturday.

The victim was left with wounds to the head and arm in the most recent attack, authorities said.

The suspect and victim had just gotten into an argument after Jordan approached the man for reasons that remain unclear as the train pulled into the Allerton Avenue subway station, police said.

That’s when Jordan struck, allegedly taking out the big blade and lashing out at his victim several times before he took off and is still on the lam, authorities said.

The victim was taken to Jacobi Hospital in stable condition.

It’s not the first time Jordan has been accused of a heinous subway crime. In June 2022, he allegedly stabbed a man in another Bronx train car in what cops said was an anti-gay hate crime.

Jordan, then of Brooklyn, spewed homophobic slurs at his victim on the first day of Pride Month, cops said.

The assault was almost identical in execution, with Jordan allegedly knifing the victim at about 1 a.m. on a Wednesday, just as the train approached the 3rd Avenue-149th Street station in Melrose.

The victim in the 2022 assault had been playing loud music on the train, according to a criminal complaint at the time.

Jordan got in trouble for a 2022 stabbing that was eerily similar to the weekend’s alleged attack.

“Turn your music down, you f–king f—-t,” Jordan, then 52, allegedly yelled.

“What did you say to me?” the victim responded.

That’s when Jordan pulled a blade and sliced the man’s wrist, authorities said, cutting several arteries and forcing him to undergo two surgeries.

Jordan fled after that assault, too. But he was picked up a day later in Manhattan on suspected heroin possession.

It’s not clear how Jordan’s 2022 case was resolved, however. DCPI

Authorities charged him two counts of assault as a hate crime, criminal possession of a weapon and aggravated harassment as a hate crime.

After his arrest, Jordan was shown surveillance video of himself.

“Yeah, that’s me,” he said, according to the complaint. “I ride the trains all the time. What of it?”

It’s not clear how that case was resolved. The Bronx District Attorney’s office did not respond to a Sunday request for comment.

The NYPD is asking anyone with information about the incident to call its Crime Stoppers Hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477) or for Spanish, 1-888-57-PISTA (74782).

Gigi Hadid has taken the next step in her relationship with Bradley Cooper, as she was seen on a family vacation with the 49-year-old actor and his daughter, Lea De Seine Cooper. The trio was spotted on Thursday, August 29, arriving in Sardinia, Italy, along with The Hangover actor’s mother, Gloria Campano. The group, dressed casually, looked relaxed and comfortable in each other’s company per photos shared by Page Six.

The 29-year-old model was dressed in a white t-shirt, light jeans, a military green cap, sunglasses, and accessorized with a purse and jewelry. Bradley, the father of one, kept it simple in a black t-shirt, burgundy pants, sunglasses, and a man bun. His six-year-old daughter, whom he shares with his ex-partner, supermodel Irina Shayk, was wearing a pink floral outfit while holding her father’s hand. Gloria led the way, dressed in a black blazer over a white top.

Their relationship has attracted attention following Gigi’s split from Zayn Malik, with whom she shares her daughter, Khai. After six years of dating, Gigi and Zayn ended their relationship. Reflecting on the breakup, she told People, “Breakup statements often seem impersonal because there is really no way to put into words what two people experience over a few years … not only in the relationship, but in life in general.”

She continued, “I’m forever grateful for the love, time, and life lessons that Z and I shared. I want nothing but the best for him and will continue to support him as a friend that I have immense respect and love for. As for the future, whatever’s meant to be will be. xG.”

Similarly, Bradley also ended his previous relationship before starting anew with Gigi. He was in a relationship with Irina Shayk, beginning in 2015 and ending in 2019. Irina, 38, spoke about their breakup to Vogue, stating, “I think in all good relationships you bring your best and your worst — it’s just the nature of a human being… Two great people don’t have to make a good couple.”

She added, “I think we’ve been very lucky to experience what we had with each other. Life without B is new ground.”
